IGS CNG Services Receives Clean Energy Award from West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection
South Charleston, WV --IGS CNG Services was recognized on Wednesday, May 28 for its commitment to expanding the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) market in West Virginia. During the awards ceremony at the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) presented the company with a Clean Energy award.
The annual Environmental Awards are designed to recognize the accomplishments of state industries, municipalities, educators, and community leaders who are committed to protecting the environment, serving as good corporate neighbors, and educating WV citizens. Companies are nominated by environmental inspectors who oversee compliance with the law, as well as other DEP personnel who assist with volunteer efforts. Eligibility is based on environmental stewardship, a violation-free record, and a history of compliance with regulatory authorities.
In 2013, WV Governor Earl Ray Tomblin established a Natural Gas Vehicle Task Force to convert one-fourth of the state’s fleet 7,800 vehicles to natural gas fuel within four years. To date, 15 CNG pickup trucks and five vans have been added, which are driven by West Virginia Department of Transportation personnel.
To support Governor Tomblin’s initiative, IGS CNG Services constructed three CNG fueling stations in West Virginia. The grand opening of its Charleston CNG fueling station in late January, located on Spring Street next to the Bigley Avenue Foodland store. Other stations are located in Bridgeport and Jane Lew, WV. Other stations are located in Dublin, Ohio and Youngstown, Ohio (which is under construction and due to open in June).
“We are pleased to be a part of making the CNG Vehicle Corridor a reality, and to make CNG available to the fleets and residents regularly traveling this area,” said Scott White, president of IGS Energy, a natural gas and electricity supplier and parent company of IGS CNG Services, based in Dublin, Ohio.
Overall, CNG is a cleaner burning alternative fuel to traditional fuels, emitting up to 30 percent less carbon dioxide, up to 75 percent less carbon monoxide and up to 95 percent less particulate matter than gasoline or diesel. The fuel also costs substantially less than the price of gasoline, is approximately 30-40 percent below current diesel prices, and is produced domestically in states including West Virginia and Ohio. Currently, there is more than a 100-year natural gas supply in the United States alone. Companies, including Chesapeake Energy, Antero Resources and EQT Corporation, have committed to fuel their vehicles along the I-79 Corridor. With CNG stations in Charleston, Jane Lew and Bridgeport, one can drive all the way from Charleston to Pittsburgh on a clean, local resource for less than $2.50 per gallon.
